It's not Just about the numbers.
There are lots of ways to grow your presence online. There are a myriad of how to guides, articles, templates and “experts” offering the latest and greatest, magic bullet, to building your presence and making an impact online.
But you have to begin with “why”.
Why do you want to do it?
Recognition? 15 minutes of fame? Seeking outside validation?
Are you wanting to improve your positioning within your career field, build a business or broaden your reach?
Make sure you are clear about what you really want to accomplish, otherwise you are wasting time while contributing to the clutter on the interwebs.
It's not about a quick hit or anything going viral.
I remember my friend, Jason Haffley from One Ninth Media, making the comment last year at Camille Leon’s, Holistic Chamber of Commerce Event “My favorite is when people ask, ’How much for a viral video?’
We both had a good chuckle over that because the perception of what viral actually means is a little skewed.
It’s not about making a quick hit. It’s not about building a zillion fans for the sake of numbers. Both are just noise in the crowded online world.
It's about old school relationship building opportunity seeking and value delivery.
What types of people do you enjoy working with?
How about people who know their stuff, are reliable, nice, fun, honest ...etc.?
Tools like LinkedIn are phenomenally powerful in terms of broadening your reach, unearthing valuable new opportunities and connections while providing you with the freedom to grow your business or career in ways that we have never seen before.
But it’s not about you.
It’s what you bring to the table, how you serve and the value you provide.
While this just touches the surface, it gives you a feel for the basics. As you get more sophisticated, test, and develop your techniques you will better understand your niche, what they want and how YOU can deliver.
It’s all about service.
