I was inspired by a piece from Andrew Griffiths for Inc. Magazine to put together a few thoughts on moving through challenging times in business. We’ve all had them, it’s what you DO during crunch time that determines your results.
This is a broad-brush overview but is a solid foundation from which to build your path to the other side.
Having gone through startup, investor acquisition, rapid growth, and crash and burn, followed by starting all over again with a bit more wisdom, skills, and savvy I’ve addressed three key takeaways from Mr. Griffiths piece that I believe to be critical, as well as a few additional thoughts on each.
“Don't make things worse by doing nothing.
Whenever you see a disaster looming, the single most important thing to do is take action. Sometimes we can be a little like a deer in the headlights, not quite believing what is going on, frozen on the spot. The problem is that if we don't leap into action, things will always get worse and they will get worse quickly.”
Over analyzing and over seeking advice and feedback can paralyze you and prevent you from doing something that will actually FIX the problem. Gather data and mentoring (preferably by someone who’s actually been there, rather than someone who loves to give advice) FAST, absorb the info., reflect and TAKE ACTION.
Monitor your results and change course as needed but don’t over think things.
“Use this situation to rethink your business.
Tough times are crossroads in our business and they provide an opportunity to make hard decisions about what is working and what is not. This is the perfect time to stop and really reflect on your business and make the changes that deep down you know you need to make.”
Is what you are offering still relevant? Is it time to add or take away a product or service offering? Where is the industry going in the next six to twelve months? What can you do to get a step ahead, rather than being a “me too” brand?
Questions can be liberating. The answers that come as a result of taking the time to ponder such things can be nothing short of miraculous!
As a side note, those outstanding answers can be found while hiking, working out, having interesting conversations, drawing, listening to music, reading etc. Step away from your desk and out of your office to plug into the answers you need.
“It is time to get out and chase business.
Just as we can stop servicing our clients during tough times, business development can also grind to a halt and we all know that this spells disaster. As hard as it may be, when times are tough, you have to ramp up your business development and push through the hard times. Winning a few new projects, or finding some new clients might just prove easier than you think and it will go a long way to making you feel better.”
Never underestimate the power of being scrappy.
What used to work long ago, but you put it aside as you got more sophisticated? This is a great time to get back to basics while being open to new options. This is not a good time to roll out an expensive, complex program but it’s a great time to get lean and mean.
Being a part of the underdog team can be cohesive for your team, make you smarter and unify you in a way that it’s tough to do when things are going along smoothly.
As the saying goes “This too shall pass” and by keeping your composure while taking positive action, you will move through this period and come out on the other side with an education that no amount of money could buy.
