Before you decide where you are going, it is of benefit to reflect upon where you have been. Do you agree?
We operate in a frenzied paced global economy...are you using one of your greatest assets...experience...to its fullest advantage?
Here are some questions to take your team through, as you review your plans for 2016. A brainstorm session involving a white board/note taking and plenty of discussion from all parties can help you see opportunities that you may not currently be seeing.
Take note...document and turn your findings into step by step action plans that are measurable. Get a feel for everyone's level of enthusiasm and buy in as you are going through these. If you can get everyone on the same page as to your newly redefined mission and they have had a part in creating said vision; then you are on your way to having a committed and unstoppable team to make 2016 one of your best years to date!
Remember...write it out...make sure everyone participates and all comments and ideas are documented.
In order to create a birds eye overview of where you are right now...put together your S.W.O.T. chart.
Strengths – These are your current or past year internal areas of strength. What are you EXCELLENT at?
Weaknesses – These are your current or past year internal areas of weakness that needs to be improved. Processes? Customer retention? Cash flow management?
Opportunities – These are external possibilities that you see for the coming year. New market segments to tap? New services or products to offer?
Threats – These are potential external threats to your growth and success in the coming year. New technologies that make what you do obsolete? Competition? Economic or industry changes?
Now that you have a big picture overview, it's time to start digging a little deeper. Open the discussion floor and start documenting the answers to these questions.
What additional skill do we need to master?
What type of expertise do we need from outside sources in order to grow and thrive?
What are our clients asking for that we are not delivering?
Where do we see our industry going in the next 12-24 months?
When you have the answers to all of these questions, you are better prepared to create a plan which helps your entire team to focus on which tasks will actually achieve predetermined results. You may decide to take on new business offerings while letting less profitable ones go by the wayside. No matter what comes out of this exercise...you can be assured that everyone will learn something and that you will have jump started the vision and direction of your organization in a big way!
