Kim Peterson, CEO CommonSenseHealth.org
When I walked into my local Starbucks this morning to grab a little Joe, and gaze out on Pikes Peak while I write my morning article. I saw a group at a table, dressed in the latest business casual garb...playing a game of UNO.
Now, keep in mind it was about 7:15am. As I walked past, I heard one of the players (who had a smug look on his face and shortly thereafter UNOed himself into the winner’s circle) say “No work talk.”
As I grabbed my skinny mocha latte made with soy (are we spoiled or what?) and sat down, I thought, “I love that guy, he’s shaking it up!”
When I ran a medical device firm it wasn’t uncommon to have meetings on a warm Spring day at a picnic table, in the field overlooking a stream, directly in front of our building.
We had a well stocked, self development library where employees could borrow anything that struck their fancy.
We had group vacation getaways for employees and family members.
We sent employees to events that helped them become better people (not to learn a particular skill that would benefit the business exclusively).
We had hiking meetings and brainstorms where we would take over a few rooms in a hotel. Everyone would bring their families. Kids and spouses would swim and play during the day while we were covering our headquarter hotel room with gigantic sticky notes outlining our future objectives.
We had our weekly meetings with super hero masks on when necessary. It helped us think better when facing insurmountable obstacles ;)
We worked hard, played hard and did things differently (before it was trendy to do so).
I’ve always questioned conventionality. Why do we have to watch a powerpoint presentation and review a handout line by line and call it productive? That’s SOOOOO BORING!
When was the last time you were bored and inspired simultaneously?
See what I mean?
So if you find yourself stuck, uninspired, facing a crisis or needing to find a new direction...shake it up! Do something fun with your teammates and staff, sometimes what seems to be the most inopportune timing can produce the most miraculous results.
You don’t have to do things the same way as “it’s always been done”.
There is a time and place to change up the recipe, try a new path and shake things up...and that time is whenever you choose it to be.
