No matter if you are a brick and mortar retail establishment or practice, you have a solid on line presence; or are just starting to take that world seriously, undoubtably your eyes have been opened to the ever evolving ways that companies/people are doing business, not just locally but as a global community.
Are you doing what it takes to capitalize on and benefit from this structure of economy?
A Cisco Study reveals that more than 70% of college students and young professionals don’t think that an office is necessary anymore. Ever advancing technology allows businesses to get more work accomplished efficiently, effectively and inexpensively by tapping into a global pool of talent.
Whether it's hiring someone from across the pond to take on a business project (sites like Fiverr.com and Outsource.com can be great resources for this) or soliciting new client prospects on the other side of the planet (LinkedIn is definitely the place to be for all needs B2B), the global economy offers new and exciting opportunities for everyone.
Personally, I love the fact that on any given night when I go to bed, someone else on the other side of the globe is working on a project for me and when I wake, I am already ahead of the game.
Social Media offers a multitude of platform configurations to help you get your message out to the world, while allowing you to search for what you want and need to grow your business.
Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram should not be overlooked as you build your on line presence. Your participation with the platforms that most resinate with your business and potential clients can go a long way towards building relationships with people you may never meet in person but will do business with. And don't forget to keep your LinkedIn profile current and relevant. The sharing of articles and interesting posts will expand your reach and enable you to connect with people who otherwise would know nothing about your areas of expertise.
Now more than ever it is time to look at your business and the offerings you currently market and analyze how they are being viewed from cultures outside of your own. What opportunities or low hanging fruit are you leaving on the table?Who should you reach out to?Where can you target your efforts that is completely different from what you've done before?
Some tips to keep in mind as you start reaching out to, and doing business with our global community...
Different cultures communicate differently.
There are vast differences in terms of what things mean (words, actions, emotions) between cultures. Learn, study, ask questions, connect.Culture Crossing is a great resource to learn basic demographics and customs from around the globe.
Become proficient with what works best for your client.
How do your potential clients, clients or contractors like to communicate? Email, Skype, calls, text? Train your staff to be versatile and effective with all, rather than expecting people to conform to the way you do things.
Communication is key.
Respond to enquiries quickly, use Skype or other forms of video communications to connect and click with mannerisms and get a better feel for the personality behind the title. Check in with team members regularly and clearly convey that you are just a text away if people need to get a hold of you quickly.
Support your team.
Plan and execute training for, respect and develop your virtual staff just like you would a traditional, in-house team. For overseas clients, go above and beyond in terms of meeting and exceeding expectations. Distance needs to be minimized by taking actions that show commitment to the project at hand.
Flexibility is key.
Not only language, but differences in time zones can create challenges when working internationally. Establishing regular methods of frequent communication with both clients and consultants is crucial. The standard 9-5 Monday through Friday is not terribly realistic when you broaden your reach. This can mean a few late at night or early morning phone or Skype sessions. Time and Date is a great resource to keep you on time and on schedule when you are juggling a number of time zones in a 24 hour period.
Agendas and meeting notes...
Creating a simple and easy to follow agenda gives everyone a better chance for success. Take a few minutes to distribute a basic agenda and desired outcomes a day before your call or Skype, then following the meeting, make the effort to send out notes and agreed follow ups as a result of your meeting. This will help everyone to stay on the same page and minimize miscommunication.
Know the scoop.
What holiday or event is going on where your staff/clients live? Find out... Google it!Knowing these things are great for conversation starters and discussing them helps build connection. And hey, learning new things is a bonus for all of us!
