If you are one of the micro businesses (less that 2.5M in annual sales) who thinks Social Media is easy, or something that can be dumped on your already overburdened, yet eager to please, assistant. Or even worse...you are doing it all yourself (gasp!). Then this article is for you!
We see it every day...a business owner does not have a complete grasp on all of the moving pieces which enable various Social Media platforms to work for them. The results can be tragic...don't be "that guy" or gal as the case may be.
Here are 3 scary facts about Social Media and how to correct them before it's too late...
Social Media is rented space! - You do not own the names and contact information from any of the widely used platforms. The only one which comes close to allowing you access is LinkedIn. As of today, LI will allow you to download a spreadsheet of all of your contacts at no cost to you, but this could certainly change at a moments notice. Bottom line...you use Social Media to pull interested prospects into your database, using various strategies (ads, boosts, video, features, promotions etc.). If you do not have an ongoing strategy to do this, you missing one of the biggest benefits Social Media has to offer... Building Your Tribe!
We are still living in the "Wild West" days of Social Media driven marketing - but make no mistake, it is now a pay-to-play game. If you are jumping into the roller coaster world of Social Media and believe that your amazingly interesting content will be going viral every time you click "post", think again. Knowing where and when to place your cash is an ever revolving conundrum. Algorithms change daily, types of advertising options change daily, the types of demographics you are able to pull from various sources changes daily. Before plopping down your hard earned cash, study the various offerings these platforms have, and how they can best be utilized to achieve your goals. Again, keep in mind that the rules change frequently...be prepared to test, split test, retest and continuously analyze results in order to maximize your efforts. Here's some beginners information on how to get going with Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
Make sure your online presence backs up your Social Media efforts. I see this ALL the time. A web presence from 2001, no email capture tools, no newsletter strategy and a brand presence which is all over the place. If this is you, don't despair...it happens to all of us and you've got to start somewhere. Keep in mind that as technology changes, you must change as well. It can be time-consuming and expensive to keep up. Just make sure that when you start committing the time, effort, energy, and money to your Social Media presence, that your online expression, both on the front and back end is clean, consistent, polished and ready to properly represent you in the marketplace.
All of these pieces go hand in hand when it comes to making Social Media work for you. When all of the plates are up and spinning properly the results can be overwhelmingly positive. When they aren't...well, your most valuable resource of time and another biggie...money can be lost. And none of us wants that!
