Steve Jobs called intuition “more powerful than intellect.”
Albert Einstein called it the "sacred gift."
Business Dictionary defines intuition in business as follows...
"Unconscious thought process that produces rapid, uninferred knowledge or solution. Though it is not analytic in the sense that it does not deliberately look for cause-and-effect (causal) relationships, intuition is not mere guesswork. Instead, it draws on previously acquired experiences and information and directly apprehends a totality. Intuition can be visionary or delusionary, uncannily correct or horrendously wrong in its conclusions."
Simone Wright with The Huffington Post defines an intuitive leader as having...
"The ability to be creative, think on the fly and make key business decisions with little time amidst the tsunami of external information is vital. Intuition is the natural intelligence that allows us to see ahead of the curve, to generate innovative ideas, to communicate powerfully and to do so without having to study spreadsheets or gather piles of data.
It is the skill we all possess that has the ability to guide us to greater business success, greater career satisfaction and more sustainable levels of innovation and service."
So how often do you use intuition in your business or career? Do you check in from time to time or do you rely solely on data to make your decisions?
Perhaps a balance of both could be the best option?
If you are looking to improve upon your business intuition, here are a few quick and simple tips to review when trying to build your strength in the "intuition for business" department.
- Take time to sleep on it when considering a new opportunity. Never force a big decision.
- What does your gut tell you when you meet someone? Perhaps a little Googling or asking around about them would be appropriate?
- Which daily task will most positively impact your bottom line or overall mission? If it feels like the most important, it probably is...get it done.
And on the flip side...what type of data do you really need to make a good decision?
Improvements over prior year?
If you've been reliant on the same reports gathered the same way for years...maybe it's time to shake things up a bit and question the data. Ask new questions like...
How else can we look at this?
What could we be missing?
What kind of information would be ideal to have? How can we make that happen?
Some people are more comfortable going with their gut and others need reams of data before making a decision. Hopefully you have a nice mix of both on your team in order to walk that fine line with the best probability of a successful outcome in as many instances as possible.
