Whether you are looking to get into an entirely different field, or improve your position where you are, here are 7 “must do” activities that will help you get on the right path towards the changes you really want for yourself.
Define what success means to you. - It’s different for everyone. Is it money? Recognition? Making a positive impact? Or a combination of a number of things.
Take some time to write out what success really means to you, then reflect daily on what life will be life once you have achieved it.
Live in the now, with satisfaction, knowing that you are on path and taking daily action towards bringing your dreams into reality.
Commit to step up. - In order to move forward towards increased levels of success, you will need to commit to doing things differently than you have been.
You must commit to putting in longer hours and completing more training.
Know that your schedule will change, put in place whatever you will need in terms of alternative arrangements for child care or help around the house, you will need it in order to step up.
It may seem daunting, at first, but there is always a way if you are committed.
Get up when you fall...fast! - There will be stumbles, falls and setbacks, rather than fight against them, embrace them as the price you’ve paid to learn a lesson, then move forward as quickly as possible.
Seek out people whom you desire to be more like. - Fill your free time with lessons from people who have paved the way. Listen to audiobooks, podcasts, TED Talks etc. while you are driving, doing things around the house, working out etc.
Ask for feedback. - What are you good at? Great at? Really. What things do you need help with (patience, organizational skills, written communication etc.), once you know, then you can take action towards improving, if not, you are flying blind.
When you have feedback on what you are great at, you can work to improve and fine tune those skills even more.
Work your network. - Have you brushed up your LinkedIn profile lately? If not, then Google best practices (options are changing all the time, look for articles/video that were created within a couple of months from the current time frame) and get your presence polished up!
Join LinkedIn groups related to the subject and industry you are in or wanting to get into.
Reach out to college buddies, or friends who are on a desirable trajectory (Warning..DO NOT reconnect with people who ARE NOT wanting to become more and improve...STAY AWAY from victim thinkers...nuff said), reconnect over coffee, lunch or by phone; you never know what little nuggets of wisdom, ideas or new connection ideas you may come away with.
Get aligned with an education organization or business training that will improve and support you on your journey. - There are sooooo many options out there, whether it’s online training with a resource like Lynda, free, top notch college courses from a site like Corsera or taking advantage of leadership training and skills improvement trough your current company or organization - get plugged in, create a game plan and start taking action.
If you start today, in six months (actually within 30 days or less), you will be on a completely new and improved trajectory than you are now. Are you ready? Let’s go!
