There are going to be times when you are feeling less than stellar, right?
Times when you are sick or your kids are, you are going through a relationship challenge or someone you love is, you are facing a new role at work or with your business where you are required to step up into an area of expertise that you are not sure you can pull off.
Can you relate?
It’s not a matter of if, but when, you are thrust into an undesirable set of circumstances. If you handle these times well, it improves your overall effectiveness when there’s smooth sailing. You simply become better.
There are times when you need to simply bow out for a while. You are very sick or a loved one is sick and needs you, etc. these times can shatter our world, and stepping back to heal or offer healing support is, in fact, the best we can do.
But most often we are called upon to deal with inconveniences which pop up and derail our progress forward.
How you handle these outside annoyances or challenges will determine how quickly you get to the other side.
Here are a few strategies which will help you push through during those times where you need a little more OOMPH than normal.
Create more morning...if you know that you do your best critical thinking in the morning when you are fresh, then create more morning. Set aside time as early as possible to get the important things finished and out of the way. I’ve been known to wake at 4:45 am in order to get a work out in, and article written before the rest if the world gets going. I can’t stand it, but sometimes that’s what needs to happen in order to fit it all in.
When taking on this strategy, I know that I’m going to be pretty worthless in the evening. Mindless tasks are fine but mental stamina is pretty much spent, so I plan accordingly.
Eliminate things that drain your energy...lunch with a negative co-worker, eating chemical laden fast food, being over-committed...assess and eliminate every time sucking activity, except what’s absolutely necessary...etc.
Reward yourself for your efforts...if you get a solid two hours of uninterrupted, focused work completed on this big task each day this week, then head out early on Friday, or schedule a pedicure, buy yourself a new audio book...whatever it is that will motivate you to stick with it.
Anticipate and plan around interruptions...turn OFF your phone. Go to a neutral place to work (think library, a coffee shop with headphones...just get out of your regular environment for a little change of pace, and decreased likelihood of getting side tracked).
Give yourself grace...even if you are not making massive steps forward every day, don’t discount your efforts. Showing up when that’s the last thing you really want to do says you are serious … and a force to be reckoned with!
