Last Thursday, a beautiful day skiing turned into a bit of a bummer situation as I wound up limping away with a pretty severe tendon strain after slow motion, twisting fall into a couple feet of powder (I know, right?).
So my day was cut short and the rest of the afternoon was spent with my thoughts rather than on the slopes.
When the unexpected comes and takes us out, we can either get mad or depressed, or we can take the opportunity to look at the world through a different set of eyes and become better as a result.
This happens in business too, right?
When these inevitable hiccups appear...asking the right questions can give you the answers you need in order to start taking action in a new direction.
Here are a few questions (influenced by one of my favorite Mentors, Tony Robbins) you can ask yourself, when the unexpected happens and you need to shift course.
What's good about this situation?
It may seem crappy on the surface but if you give it some thought, you will find that you are about to learn something. Dig deep...what's good about where you are right now? What are you about to learn?
What's not great yet?
This presupposes that things are going to get better. You are on your way to finding a solution. What needs to happen in order to get things the way you want them to be?
What will it feel like when they are?
Who can I reach out to who's done this before?
We truly have the world at our finger tips. We can search solutions to almost any challenge and learn from those who have have had success turning things around.
Whether it's loosing 100+ pounds, climbing back from a bankruptcy, overcoming divorce or the failure of a business, there is someone out there who's already done it successfully.
Seek out mentors in order to learn strategies that will help you do the same.
What can I do to turn this around while enjoying the process?
Is it going to be easy? Probably not.
But think in terms of how you can set yourself up to win. How can you reward yourself for following through?
You may have to get up earlier, stay up later AND do things that push you right out of your comfort zone, but what will it feel like when you DO turn things around.
Keep that vision in the forefront of your mind as you move through your daily activities.
Don't let a setback determine your world view. It's a challenge. That's all.
Challenges are meant to be overcome and when you ask the right questions it will help you get there in record time!
