Kim Peterson, CEO CommonSenseHealth.org
Every day offers opportunity...making that scary phone call, introducing yourself to a potential mentor at a conference or event, reaching out and offering to help others get to the next rung of success and development.
Small acts of networking can eventually lead to big leaps in opportunities.
After a few decades of being involved with and running a number of entrepreneurial endeavors, three factors come mind when assessing whether or not a new (BIG) opportunity will be a good fit for you.
1) Are you willing to do what it takes? Lifestyle changes, travel etc.
Don’t underestimate what it may take to get a new project off the ground. You may (and likely will) be kissing the whole “work / life balance” thing goodbye for the next few years. Are you in a place in life that you are ready and willing to make that commitment?
2) Do you have what it takes? Skills? Team? Network? Or are you ready to do what it will take to put it all together?
While you don’t have to have all the answers (I don’t think anyone actually ever does, and if they claim to, they are likely trying to sell you something), you do need to have a burning desire to do whatever it takes to find the resources necessary to deliver something bigger than anything you’ve ever accomplished before.
3) Are you ready to embrace uncertainty and learn to love the pain?
Let’s be real, uncertainty = pain. Living on the edge = pain. Being a business or industry disruptor is scary and exhilarating (like having investors, the FDA, and big pharma all breathing down your neck at the same time...it’s a real blast) at the same time. Do you have the type of personality that can withstand the storm and more importantly, are you willing to volunteer to brave it?
While I’m all about making miracles happen and following your dreams, knowing up front that “overnight success” is generally born from years of work and challenge will hopefully help those of you wanting to step up, stay the course when things get rough. Overcoming the rough patches are all a part of the process but having a little insight up front never hurts.
