Someone asked me yesterday…”Do you watch The Bachelor?” (not intending to alienate all Bachelor fans...just stay with me).
Ummm..no. I haven’t watched TV for years.
Why? Who has the time?
Do you really have an extra four hours a day to “unwind” in front of a box (we are not even going to go there right now...I’ll save it for another rant), but you just can’t squeeze in the time to work out or cook healthy meals? Really?
According to a 2016 Nielsen report: In the United States (adults) devoted about 10 hours and 39 minutes each day to consuming media during the first quarter of this year.
Or put more succinctly...sitting in front of a box.
In order to live the life you want… STOP DOING THE THINGS THAT DON’T MATTER, so that you have more time to focus on what does.
For example...You are frustrated with your boss, feel you are going nowhere with your career, but don’t have the time to educate yourself in a way that will open doors and create opportunities for you?
But you DO have hours and hours of free time to post, like, comment or watch shows where other people live their lives in a staged (but meant to be real life like) manner?
How messed up is that?
The bottom line is this… What are you willing to give up, in order to get what you want?
Here are four tips that are time tested; and I use personally to stay on track (and get back on track when I fall off from time to time...we all do...don’t beat yourself up).
Use a timer to get and stay focused on the task at hand. Whether it’s eliminating clutter in your kitchen, doing laundry or writing that report you have been putting off for weeks...start with 15-minute increments and build from there until you have a focus time that works best for you.
Visualize yourself effortlessly moving from task to task...rather than freaking yourself out on how you don’t have enough time to get everything done. Your mindset is key to your overall success. I know that sometimes you may be managing toddlers who are having a meltdown, dealing with partners who need your attention, juggling travel and work schedules...but if you are wringing your hands and focusing on how you can’t possibly get it all done, you never will...so STOP!
Time is your most valuable asset...watch whom you are spending it with. Do your friends like to get together for happy hour and bitch about how bad the government, their boss or their teammates are? Do you really have time for that? I know it’s tough, but to level up you need to leave people like this behind. Brutal, but accurate.
DECIDE you are going to move forward with a certain activity (walk with kids or partner after dinner, meal prep on Sundays with family, reading or listening to a book a month that will help you become better at a skill set you are looking to improve) and MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Let me ask you something...Do you make the time to brush your teeth, shower or apply makeup every day (or pretty much every day...this conversation could take a downward slant real quick...stay focused)?
The great news is that once you incorporate productive habits into your life, the bad ones no longer have room to thrive, shrivel up and go away.
As one of the men I so greatly admire once said...
“Do not squander time for that is the stuff life is made of.” - Benjamin Franklin
Step away from the screen and into the life you were meant to live!
