When you think of getting into a meditative state, your mind likely goes to sitting crossed legged on a bolster or the floor, hands folded or on your knees, eyes closed...right?
While that may be a traditional meditative position, it is also possible to achieve similar results (less anxiety, more creativity, more compassion, better memory, less stress, reversal of aging process) while practicing every day activities with a more present mind.
Walking or running can be a very powerful form of meditation if practiced mindfully. The rhythmic and repetitive action or motion can be very soothing if you clear your mind during the process. I remember running last winter as a means to work through a very stressful situation I was going through. I would run even if it was well below zero (Ya, I was a little crazed!) but with each step I was working through and past pain and challenge.
I actually looked forward to those sub zero runs as it was not only making my body stronger and more fit but my mind as well.
Gardening, walking in the woods, hiking any form of connecting with nature can also offer an opportunity to be actively present and absorbed in the experience, which in turn clears the mind.
Nature is a beautiful healing and rebalancing force that, I believe, we should all access regularly, rather like pushing an internal reset button of sorts.
Whatever form or method of moving meditation you choose to incorporate into your life, know that it will positively impact so many other areas, be prepared to become inspired!
