I knew the day would come where I would have to dig a little deeper and share some pain in order to help, comfort or guide someone who is currently on a similar path.
It is with a sense of obligation that I share with you my personal journey.
I am currently in the final phases of dissolving a marriage that lasted 26 years. As with many divorces, the cracks in the foundation and pain had been going on for years, but we like to be loyal and forthright, do the right thing and not give up.
In our instance, we had grown into very different people and it is in the best interests of everyone involved to move forward as separate individuals.
The journey that has gotten me to this point has been filled with pain, uncertainty, overwhelm, fear, discovery, understanding, acceptance and finally, peace.
I would not change any of it if given the opportunity. Dark times and challenge teaches us so much about who we are, who our friends are, how strong our family is and what we are actually capable of.
As you know, there are a multitude of ways to deal with stress, challenge and uncertainty, those that build us up and those that tear us down.
Thankfully, I chose the building up option. In my eyes I saw no other alternative. It was necessary to create a new identity and life for myself I got to choose how it looked and the type of people in it.
So one of the first things I did was to throw myself into a clean eating and a consistent work out routine. Not a diet or quick fix program, but a lifestyle.
As a result, I lost a total of 75 pounds and have the energy, confidence and fitness level that I never thought possible.
The second thing I did was to map out what I want, what I really want for this next phase of my life. Interestingly, the things that I once thought were of critical importance, really weren't that important at all.
I keep a note on my phone describing what I would like various segments of my life to look like, then update and tweak it as necessary, covering everything from my fitness and health to career, friends family and love life. Point being, I get to impact how it all plays out.
While there is much in life we cannot control, we can control our focus, the actions we take and our response to challenging people and circumstances.
If you find yourself in an overwhelming situation currently, know that "This too shall pass." Nothing is permanent in this life.
Love yourself enough to create the life YOU really want and be strong enough every day towards bringing into reality.
