Expanding Your Comfort Zone - Why You Must And How You Can

It’s scary to put yourself out there, isn’t it?!

What if you are wrong? What if people ignore you? What if you look stupid?

Isn’t it crazy that as educated “grown ups” we allow ourselves to get caught up in these self-defeating thought spirals?

We allow this way of thinking to justify our lack of progress forward. It can immobilize us and cause us to do the same things (the things we are comfortable with) over and over again, all the while wondering why we aren’t reaching the goals we’ve set for ourselves.

The next time you feel the fear, put yourself into “Do It Anyway” mode.

Try it. The key is to take baby steps. Once you’ve overcome something small, you start to build muscle or expand your comfort zone. Each day builds upon the last and 30 days from now you will be looking at the world from a vastly different perspective.

Make that scary phone call … it won’t be as bad as you are building it up to be in your head. Take the action and when you are on the other side, you will be so grateful that you did.

Follow up … don’t get caught up in not wanting to impose. We are all busy. If you are genuine with your follow through, people will sense that and appreciate your efforts. As Nike said, “Just Do It.”

Research/discover and attend that event … even if you are attending alone. Nothing earth shattering happens while sitting in front of a screen. GET OUT THERE! And when you do … DON’T use your screen as a crutch. Make eye contact. Go out on a limb and actually SPEAK to another human being. The results can be pretty outstanding!

Learn something new … it will broaden your horizons. Read for 30 min. a day, listen to podcasts or books while commuting. Seek out an expert in another industry to learn from.

As Dr. Abigail Brenner for Psychology Today writes

“Don’t settle for the mediocre just to avoid stepping out of your comfort zone; it’s too big a price to pay. Your challenges and risk experiences are cumulative. Every time you try something new, allow yourself to be open to whatever experience arises, you are learning, and expanding your repertoire of life skills and self-knowledge. As you do this you are also expanding the size of your comfort zone.
Leaving your comfort zone ultimately helps you to deal with change---and making change in a much better way. Life transitions are all about change. Each time you transition you move to another level. Inevitably, these life transitions transform you.”

You are only confined by the walls you build yourself. Break through, one baby step at a time!

You know that feeling you get when one day blends into the next, you aren't feeling inspired, you aren't getting the results you had wished for yourself, and things are just plodding along? No Bueno!

Maybe you feel as if you are in a constant state of frustration, overwhelm or boredom. You feel you are not making forward progress.

You know that you are capable of doing so much more than you are and you have something bigger inside of you to give, but you just haven't figured out how that's going to happen from where you currently are standing.

We all go through that feeling and those times.

Contrary to current popular belief, life isn't supposed to be full of bliss and joy and peace and wonderment every second of every moment of every day.

When you fall into these funky periods, it usually means it’s time to shake things up. You learn and grow from doing so.

So how do you make a positive shift, rather than allowing this state to suck up any more days of your life than it already has?

Breaking yourself out often times means its time to …

Do something different to get some fresh ideas and insights. Below are a few thought starters and resources to help you do so.

Meet some new people outside of your regular circle of friends or networking associates.

Attend some new events, those within your niche and those that are not.

Read or listen to a new book.

Part of the experience and juiciness of life comes from overcoming seeming conundrums and challenges. You must become better in order to reach the next level.

Getting frustrated is often the catalyst to help you do so, so embrace it, take a different approach and watch your perspective, mood and results improve as a result!

I am a firm believer in small things that can make a big impact. Quotes are one of those things that can change the trajectory of your entire day.

So prepare to be inspired, take action as you are moved to do so and make the most of this day!

"Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers, you cannot be successful or happy". – Norman Vincent Peale

"The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself." – Oscar Wilde

"There are risks and costs to action. But they are far less than the long range risks of comfortable inaction." – John F. Kennedy

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." – Mark Twain

“You don't actually do a project; you can only do action steps related to it. When enough of the right action steps have been taken, some situation will have been created that matches your initial picture of the outcome closely enough that you can call it "done.”
― David Allen

“Until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else.” - Peter Drucker

“It’s not knowing what to do, it’s doing what you know.” - Tony Robbins

“Once you have mastered time, you will understand how true it is that most people overestimate what they can accomplish in a year – and underestimate what they can achieve in a decade!” - Tony Robbins

Get Important Things DONE!   Here's the Magic Bullet ...

I recently finished listening to the audiobook, Triggers, by Marshall Goldsmith, this is one of those books that is a game changer, as it speaks to the challenges that we all face when trying to become a better version of ourselves.

It’s tough, we stumble, we fall … even the most impressive and successful among us need help actually taking action, rather than just reading about becoming a better communicator, more effective leader, better Mom, better Dad, better Grandparents.

On his site, the book is described as follows.

“Our reactions don’t occur in a vacuum. They are usually the result of unappreciated triggers in our environment—the people and situations that lure us into behaving in a manner diametrically opposed to the colleague, partner, parent, or friend we imagine ourselves to be. These triggers are constant and relentless and omnipresent. The smell of bacon wafts up from the kitchen, and we forget our doctor’s advice on lowering our cholesterol. Our phone chirps, and we glance instinctively at the glaring screen instead of looking into the eyes of the person we are with. So often the environment seems to be outside our control. Even if that is true, as Goldsmith points out, we have a choice in how we respond.

In Triggers, his most powerful and insightful book yet, Goldsmith shows how we can overcome the trigger points in our lives, and enact meaningful and lasting change.
Change, no matter how urgent and clear the need, is hard. Knowing what to do does not ensure that we will actually do it. We are superior planners, says Goldsmith, but become inferior doers as our environment exerts its influence through the course of our day. We forget our intentions. We become tired, even depleted, and allow our discipline to drain down like water in a leaky bucket. In Triggers, Goldsmith offers a simple “magic bullet” solution in the form of daily self-monitoring, hinging around what he calls “active” questions. These are questions that measure our effort, not our results. There’s a difference between achieving and trying; we can’t always achieve a desired result, but anyone can try. In the course of Triggers, Goldsmith details the six “engaging questions” that can help us take responsibility for our efforts to improve and help us recognize when we fall short.”

We all understand that …

When you are on top of your financial situation, there is always money in the bank. Stress is minimized substantially as a result.

When you work out regularly and eat well, your clothes fit better, you are more confident and you have the energy to keep up and excel in our fast-paced world.

When you are present and put an emphasis on communicating with the person in front of you (in both business and personally) rather than being distracted or multi-tasking, you have a greater chance of getting it right the first time rather than having to go back multiple times to correct miscommunications.

Dr. Goldsmith suggests asking yourself the following questions and tracking your results every day.

The “magic bullet” questions or questions which measure your effort, not your results are:
  • Did I do my best to set clear goals?
  • Did I do my best to make progress towards goal achievement?
  • Did I do my best to find meaning?
  • Did I do my best to be happy?
  • Did I do my best to build positive relationships?
  • Did I do my best to be fully engaged?

When you realize, recognize and monitor the Triggers that keep you from taking the action you need in the most critical areas of your life, you have the fuel and resources to make small tweaks in your behavior which lead to BIG results in your life.

4 Great Ways to Reach Your Goals Faster! Spoiler Alert: They Aren't Sexy, But They WORK!

I was listening to a recent Dave Ramsey podcast where Dave took a call from a woman who was 30 years old, had been working minimum wage jobs her entire career, had a one-year-old and was engaged to be married. Her call was regarding how to become a real estate investor.

The response that was given to her was something to the effect of…

“You need to start where you are, and make improvements to yourself, in order to become the type of individual who could eventually be a successful real estate investor.”

In other words…

You need to put in the time, effort and energy needed to grow into the type of person who could potentially be successful in this arena.

You will likely need to change the way you think, dress and act.
It’s quite probable that you will need to change the people you hang out with.
Many of your habits will need to be upgraded.
You will need to commit to the discipline of study and taking complete responsibility for your actions and outcomes.

Going from minimum wage thinking to successful investor takes a multitude of steps and years of commitment and effort.

Human nature tends to make us want to believe that there is a magical piece of advice or a singular message from on high that, if followed, will give us every happiness we desire.

The truth of the matter is that achievement, excellent and success are all life-long pursuits and all take consistent and unrelenting effort.

The fast path to cash, abundance to all good things simply does not exist.

Having the inclination and desire to never endingly improve, and the energy and drive to do what it takes, day in and day out, determines whether or not you bring your goals into reality.

But success doesn't happen in a vacuum, it’s important to find support, encouragement, and guidance when planning a course of personal improvement. Here are a few ways to speed the process along.

  • Join a group, association, coaching or mentoring program that will challenge and encourage you to improve.

  • Read or listen to Biographies of people who have accomplished great things and overcome seemingly insurmountable challenge.

  • Get up earlier and stay up later when you need to, in order to make bigger strides forward each day.

  • Don't waste time! Set timers to keep you on task, get your least desirable but most impactful task out of the way first each day.

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” — Winston Churchill

It’s not the “magic formula” but your ability to listen, learn and take action towards the accomplishments you seek which will ultimately determine your destination.

How This One Word Can Change Everything!

Have you ever notice that some people always seem to be embroiled in some sort of drama? Something is ALWAYS going on in their lives that often times is the reason why they are late, tired, didn’t finish the project they were working on or can’t seem to keep up.

And there are other people who travel for business, manage their kid’s sports team, run a mastermind group, work out regularly, and run their own company all while remaining upbeat, positive, productive and fun to be around.

Why is that?

Why do some people glide through life, while others seem to be caught in a quagmire 24-7?

One word …

per·spec·tive
pərˈspektiv/

a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.
"most guidebook history is written from the editor's perspective"
synonyms:
outlook, view, viewpoint, point of view, POV, standpoint, position, stand, stance, angle, slant, attitude, frame of mind, frame of reference, approach, way of looking, interpretation
"her perspective on things had changed"

While we often times cannot control what gets thrown at us in a given day, we can control how we react to it.

The greater your ability to adapt and shift your perspective during times you are running late, technology hits a roadblock, you are stuck in traffic on the way to an important meeting or job interview etc., the better your ability to glide rather than trudge through the challenges that inevitably pop up.

You are capable of accomplishing so much more than you give yourself credit for and often times you slow yourself down by offering a limited rather than positive perspective of what’s going on around you.

If you are running late,  when you arrive you apologize profusely and tell the truth about why you were delayed. Maybe it was because your toddler had an explosive diaper as you were walking out the door. How many people can relate to that scenario? You may even find you now have a common bond with this individual as a result. If nothing else, you will seem more human and honest, both of which are good things.

When technology fries out...which is does from time to time. You can choose to be understanding as to the difficulty of the IT person’s job and how thankful you are that they are their to help you, rather than shouting him or her down, claiming your self importance and how things MUST be repaired ASAP or the world will come to an abrupt and fiery end.

When you are stuck in traffic you can use the time wisely to listed to an informative or uplifting podcast, after calling to let the person you will be meeting that you are running a little late. You may even catch a tidbit or two that will help you perform even better once you get there.

The bottom line is this…

With the proper perspective you can turn most any situation into one that serves, rather than holds you back. So step up your perspective and simultaneously your life in general!

Sometimes a few words of wisdom can be all you need to stop procrastinating, feeling overwhelmed or overcome paralysis.

Here are 14 simple and powerful little nuggets for your review. Let one or two change your trajectory for the good … TODAY.

“People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, make them.”
― George Bernard Shaw

The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work. -Harry Golden

“Life keeps throwing me stones. And I keep finding the diamonds...”
― Ana Claudia Antunes

“The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.”
― Molière

If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door. -Milton Berle

“...I started to realize how many great things could happen by confronting the things that scare you most.” ― David Archuleta

Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go. -William Feather

Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. -Robert F. Kennedy

Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body. -Seneca

“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.” ― Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional. -Roger Crawford

The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials. -Chinese proverb

Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are. -Bernice Johnson Reagon

“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”  ― Paulo Coelho

5 Decisions You Can Make RIGHT NOW that Will Help You Bounce Back from SetBacks...FAST!

There will be numerous times in our lives when we have to come back fighting after a big blow.

It's tough getting back up when you are beaten up and tired. But during these times of challenge is when we find out what we are made of; and the act of getting up and showing up can make all the difference in the world.

Here are a few tips to help you DECIDE to get momentum back on your side.

DECIDE to go to bed early … if at all possible, get to bed at a reasonable time. Start winding down with a book, lay out your outfit for the next day, get everything ready so that your possibility of achieving small wins, right out of bed, is as high as possible.

If you drink alcohol … DECIDE  to let it go … you may think it takes the edge off, is socially acceptable and causes no harm, but the cumulative effects of drinking every night are negative and it can also impact your sleep...not a good thing as you are staging your comeback.

DECIDE to limit mind numbing activities - excessive internet surfing and tv watching - I know I'll get feedback that this is how you unwind … but please give it a try.

Your brain needs time to process what has happened, where you are right now and what need to be done to get you back on track. Checking out is not the answer, constructive reflection is.

DECIDE to ditch the negativity. If the people you hang out with (at work or friends and family) are focusing on how terrible things are every time you talk to them, put them on a temporary hiatus. In order to move past challenge you truly cannot afford the luxury of a negative thought.

DECIDE to Keep your eyes on where you are going, not where you have been.

This is a MUST in order to move past challenge and into the life you want. You cannot wallow or think of yourself as a victim. You have to create your final outcome as clearly as possible in your mind, plan and then take action towards it achievement.

DECIDE to take care of yourself using these 5 steps and you will gain the positive momentum you need in order to bounce back better than before in less time than you thought.

Ending Procrastination In Order To Achieve BIG Goals - Here's How

2/2/2017

Picture

Kim Peterson, CEO CommonSenseHealth.org

Humans are interesting, aren’t we?

We say we want things...really badly...like a new job or career, to lose weight, find the right partner, raise our kids with all the benefits which we may not have had, move into that great neighborhood, start your dream business...and the list goes on.

We may even start to look into what it will take to make it happen...but stop there.

If you’ve achieved any level of what success means to you, you’ve followed through completely to make it happen. When a goal seems to align with what we believe we are capable of, then the achievement is not all that far of a stretch.

It may be a challenge to finish your education, land a good job, buy a home etc. but you do it. On the other hand, when you are faced with something completely out of your comfort zone...maybe it’s writing a book, moving across the country or outside of the country for a better opportunity, leaving one career path for something completely different...the rules change a bit, don’t they?

Our path may become a little less clear (how in THE WORLD am I going to pull that off?) and uncertain (there’s NO WAY I’ll ever hit that goal, it’s never been done before).

That is when procrastination and fear can absolutely DESTROY positive momentum forward...DON’T let this happen to you!

When you are procrastinating because of the fact that you are stepping completely into the unknown, rather than the “I just don’t feel like doing it.” type, you really need to bring your mojo in order to overcome.

The good news is you’ve already done this...but now it’s time to click it up a notch or two, then get you going on autopilot, so that every future challenge or goal becomes easier and easier to achieve.

When your mind wanders to things like ...I can’t do this because… I don’t have the money, I don’t have the self-confidence, I have no idea how...STOP IT & DROP IT! Those types of thoughts will keep you stuck and stagnant forever.

Instead...take yourself to the place in your mind where you have already accomplished your major goal. What do your daily routines look like? What types of people are you hanging out with? etc.

When you are in the place where you have already done this thing (that you currently have no idea how to do) the ideas will come to you. Your brain will actively seek solutions which pave the path towards your achievement of your goal.

The insights are subtle, you may be in a bookstore or surfing online and a book will catch your attention, you may be invited to an event, you may have someone from your past pop into your head...reach out, read or listen to audio, attend events and talk to people. Get a little (or a lot) uncomfortable. All of these things will help you move closer to your ultimate objective.

You don’t have to know all the answers upfront, you just have to be willing to “Begin with the end in mind.” as the late, great Stephen Covey used to say.

The clearer you get on your desired objective and the more open you are to taking consistent action towards learning and growing your way towards its achievement ... the faster you will get there.

What is it going to take in order for you to level up?

Humans are such interesting creatures. While we are capable of creating and producing monumental advancements in technology and lifestyle improvements, we all deal with an internal dialog that can at times be positive and uplifting; and other times crushing and defeating.

I would argue that most people are aware of the fact that if they consume large quantities of fast food regularly, while sitting in front of a box for hours a day (playing video games, mindlessly surfing the net, binge watching movies or TV shows)  and not follow through on commitments...would lead to some very negative consequences.

But when we appear okay on the surface...we have a respectable career or are running a business that is paying the bills...the kids are clean (most of the time) and fed...and you pay your bills on time (not without angst as you anticipate the future and how you will carve out financial security with all the obligations you have)...yet there is an underlying current of fear, that if stepping up and moving past the comfort of normalcy would be painful, unrealistic and even selfish to pursue.

It is not selfish to want to become more...better than you are right now.

Comfort and the desire not to step out of bounds can create a self-imposed prison.

Being extremely uncomfortable (on the cusp of losing your home, job, business etc.)  can be the biggest blessing you could ask for, as you are then FORCED to take action consistently until you dig out.

But why wait until desperation forces your hand?

Why not DECIDE what you want and take daily actions towards the goal...now?

Why not take small bites every day...while you are semi comfortable...in order to move towards fulfillment or security or notoriety...whatever it is that you inwardly crave?

You have to want to listen to that voice or feeling inside, encouraging you to be more, do more, contribute more and take small actions daily towards your objectives.
