I am a firm believer in small things that can make a big impact. Quotes are one of those things that can change the trajectory of your entire day.

So prepare to be inspired, take action as you are moved to do so and make the most of this day!

"Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers, you cannot be successful or happy". – Norman Vincent Peale

"The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself." – Oscar Wilde

"There are risks and costs to action. But they are far less than the long range risks of comfortable inaction." – John F. Kennedy

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." – Mark Twain

― Theodore Roosevelt

“Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work in hand. The Sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus”
― Alexander Graham Bell

“You don't actually do a project; you can only do action steps related to it. When enough of the right action steps have been taken, some situation will have been created that matches your initial picture of the outcome closely enough that you can call it "done.”
― David Allen

“Until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else.” - Peter Drucker

“It’s not knowing what to do, it’s doing what you know.” - Tony Robbins

“Once you have mastered time, you will understand how true it is that most people overestimate what they can accomplish in a year – and underestimate what they can achieve in a decade!” - Tony Robbins

“It is not enough to be busy… The question is: what are we busy about?” - Henry David Thoreau

“Nothing is less productive than to make more efficient what should not be done at all.” - Peter Drucker

“Lost time is never found again.” - Benjamin Franklin

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” - Charles Darwin

“Improved productivity means less human sweat, not more.” - Henry Ford

Get Important Things DONE!   Here's the Magic Bullet ...

I recently finished listening to the audiobook, Triggers, by Marshall Goldsmith, this is one of those books that is a game changer, as it speaks to the challenges that we all face when trying to become a better version of ourselves.

It’s tough, we stumble, we fall … even the most impressive and successful among us need help actually taking action, rather than just reading about becoming a better communicator, more effective leader, better Mom, better Dad, better Grandparents.

On his site, the book is described as follows.

“Our reactions don’t occur in a vacuum. They are usually the result of unappreciated triggers in our environment—the people and situations that lure us into behaving in a manner diametrically opposed to the colleague, partner, parent, or friend we imagine ourselves to be. These triggers are constant and relentless and omnipresent. The smell of bacon wafts up from the kitchen, and we forget our doctor’s advice on lowering our cholesterol. Our phone chirps, and we glance instinctively at the glaring screen instead of looking into the eyes of the person we are with. So often the environment seems to be outside our control. Even if that is true, as Goldsmith points out, we have a choice in how we respond.

In Triggers, his most powerful and insightful book yet, Goldsmith shows how we can overcome the trigger points in our lives, and enact meaningful and lasting change.
Change, no matter how urgent and clear the need, is hard. Knowing what to do does not ensure that we will actually do it. We are superior planners, says Goldsmith, but become inferior doers as our environment exerts its influence through the course of our day. We forget our intentions. We become tired, even depleted, and allow our discipline to drain down like water in a leaky bucket. In Triggers, Goldsmith offers a simple “magic bullet” solution in the form of daily self-monitoring, hinging around what he calls “active” questions. These are questions that measure our effort, not our results. There’s a difference between achieving and trying; we can’t always achieve a desired result, but anyone can try. In the course of Triggers, Goldsmith details the six “engaging questions” that can help us take responsibility for our efforts to improve and help us recognize when we fall short.”

We all understand that …

When you are on top of your financial situation, there is always money in the bank. Stress is minimized substantially as a result.

When you work out regularly and eat well, your clothes fit better, you are more confident and you have the energy to keep up and excel in our fast-paced world.

When you are present and put an emphasis on communicating with the person in front of you (in both business and personally) rather than being distracted or multi-tasking, you have a greater chance of getting it right the first time rather than having to go back multiple times to correct miscommunications.

Dr. Goldsmith suggests asking yourself the following questions and tracking your results every day.

The “magic bullet” questions or questions which measure your effort, not your results are:
  • Did I do my best to set clear goals?
  • Did I do my best to make progress towards goal achievement?
  • Did I do my best to find meaning?
  • Did I do my best to be happy?
  • Did I do my best to build positive relationships?
  • Did I do my best to be fully engaged?

When you realize, recognize and monitor the Triggers that keep you from taking the action you need in the most critical areas of your life, you have the fuel and resources to make small tweaks in your behavior which lead to BIG results in your life.

Get More Done Every Day When You Do These 3 Simple Things

You know the days that you look at your color coded, highly thought through, with no margin for error, schedule first thing in the morning and think, “What was I thinking?!” “No way I’m going to knock this all out!”

The longer I’m on the planet, the more I understand that while we strive for alleged balance, the philosophy of seasons better describes how we flow through our lives.

For example, when your travel schedule is brutal, it’s harder to keep things running smoothly at home and when business is slower than usual, money concerns may creep to the forefront of your mind.

There are seasons for every aspect of life and when one area is humming along nicely there is likely another one that will shortly be demanding your attention.

Here are three quick and easy tactics you can start using to clear through the work load, clutter and seasonal obligations of life...

Learn to eliminate distractions and interruptions. Set your work space up in such a way that helps you be most productive when you are there. Use a timer to stay on task. Say no to unscheduled calls or meetings. Don’t check your email every 15 minutes. Focus!

Start your day with movement. Even if you just hop on the treadmill for ten minutes or take a walk around the block, clearing your head and moving your body will help you better manage your day, make better decisions and have more energy overall.

Commit to rolling with it. If you let every setback, challenge or bump in the road completely derail you then you lose. Don’t fall into that trap. Move past annoyances and setbacks with grace. Often times leaving a situation alone for a bit gives it the opportunity to turn itself around...a little like rebooting your computer or phone.

It doesn’t have to be complicated or complex. Some days are going to be packed, others lose, sometimes everyone will be loving your contribution and others you'll seem not to be able to do anything right.

But with intention, grace, patience and a few tools to help you guide the way you will roll through the seasons of your life in a much more calm, smooth and present way.

3 Quick (Science-Backed) Ways to Feel Powerful & Achieve More...FASTER!

Stand tall! Hands on hips, head held high!

Visualize yourself already there, having accomplished your goals.

Expect it. What does someone in this position do next? Take that action.

You’ve heard all these suggestions, right?

But did you know that there is a bit of science backing up the fact that you can, in fact, change your outlook and outcome by taking some simple actions?

Here are three, science-backed activities you can do, which will help you move forward faster and more eloquently than you would on your own. And, heck, science says so...so you’ve got that going for you ;)

1) Strike a pose

According to Amy Cuddy, during her 2012 Ted Talk…

“There’s one very important thing that everyone should do before heading into a job interview, giving a big speech or attempting an athletic feat. According to Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist at Harvard Business School, everyone should spend two minutes power posing. What, you ask, is power posing? It is adopting the stances associated with confidence, power and achievement — chest lifted, head held high, arms either up or propped on the hips.

Cuddy, along with her collaborator Dana Carney of Berkeley, ran an experiment in which people were directed to adopt either high-power or low-power poses for two minutes. Then they were asked if they wanted to gamble. Cuddy and Carney found that 86% of those who posed in the high-power position opted to gamble, while only 60% of the low-power posers felt comfortable taking a roll of the dice. But even more interesting — there were physiological differences between the two groups, as shown by saliva samples. While high-power posers showed an 8% increase in testosterone, low-power posers had a 10% decrease in the hormone. Meanwhile, the inverse relationship happened with cortisol, the hormone related to stress. While high-power posers experienced a 25% decrease in cortisol levels, low-power posers had a 15% increase in their stress levels.”

“Our nonverbals govern how we think and feel about ourselves. Our bodies change our minds,” says Cuddy.”

2) Write it down!

According to MentalFloss

“It turns out that in group dynamics, early assertiveness becomes self-enforcing. In a 2013 study published by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers randomly assigned three groups of college students the task of writing two paragraphs on either their job ambitions, their duties and obligations, or their commutes. They then formed same-sex teams using students from each of the three groups and instructed them to brainstorm a hypothetical startup company. Afterwards, everyone took a survey in which they rated the extent they respected and admired the other members of their team. The researchers found that the individuals who had written about their ambitions enjoyed a higher rank in the group pecking order and were perceived as being more assertive and proactive than those who had focused on their job duties or commutes. By just shifting your thoughts to your goals, the research suggests, you can project a more capable, confident persona.”

3) Act as if. Mimic others who are already there.

Herminia Ibarra at
Harvard Business Review ads...

“Novices emulate favorite bosses and colleagues in an effort to look and talk as if they know what they are doing — even when they have no clue. It’s how they develop and grow (just as children do, first imitating their parents, then their peers). But this natural — and efficient — learning process tends to break down as people gain experience and stature. As we become more certain about what we “know” and who we are, the idea of mimicking others feels artificial, even distasteful. So we stick with what’s natural and comfortable. And that’s precisely what gets us in trouble as we hit career transitions that call for new and different ways of leading.

In my research on how experienced managers and professionals step up to bigger leadership roles, I have observed both the value and the difficulty of returning to our youthful, fake-it-till-you-learn-it strategies. The only way to pick up the “softer” skills that we need to lead with greater impact is to observe and emulate people who already have them, trying their strategies and behaviors on for size before making them our own.”

So pose, write and act as if you are already there, in order to arrive much faster than you ever thought possible.

I was listening to a recent Dave Ramsey podcast where Dave took a call from a woman who was 30 years old, had been working minimum wage jobs her entire career, had a one-year-old and was engaged to be married. Her call was regarding how to become a real estate investor.

The response that was given to her was something to the effect of…

“You need to start where you are, and make improvements to yourself, in order to become the type of individual who could eventually be a successful real estate investor.”

In other words…

You need to put in the time, effort and energy needed to grow into the type of person who could potentially be successful in this arena.

You will likely need to change the way you think, dress and act.
It’s quite probable that you will need to change the people you hang out with.
Many of your habits will need to be upgraded.
You will need to commit to the discipline of study and taking complete responsibility for your actions and outcomes.

Going from minimum wage thinking to successful investor takes a multitude of steps and years of commitment and effort.

Human nature tends to make us want to believe that there is a magical piece of advice or a singular message from on high that, if followed, will give us every happiness we desire.

The truth of the matter is that achievement, excellent and success are all life-long pursuits and all take consistent and unrelenting effort.

The fast path to cash, abundance to all good things simply does not exist.

Having the inclination and desire to never endingly improve, and the energy and drive to do what it takes, day in and day out, determines whether or not you bring your goals into reality.

But success doesn't happen in a vacuum, it’s important to find support, encouragement, and guidance when planning a course of personal improvement. Here are a few ways to speed the process along.

  • Join a group, association, coaching or mentoring program that will challenge and encourage you to improve.

  • Read or listen to Biographies of people who have accomplished great things and overcome seemingly insurmountable challenge.

  • Get up earlier and stay up later when you need to, in order to make bigger strides forward each day.

  • Don't waste time! Set timers to keep you on task, get your least desirable but most impactful task out of the way first each day.

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” — Winston Churchill

It’s not the “magic formula” but your ability to listen, learn and take action towards the accomplishments you seek which will ultimately determine your destination.

How Focus Can Help You Unwind AND Succeed

Kim Peterson, CEO CommonSenseHealth.org

When you are the type of person who wants to make an impact on the world in your own unique way a few words used to describe this personality type are... driven, committed, unstoppable, focused, dynamic.

However, in order to maintain this level of intensity consistently, you must also have times where you unplug, let go, unwind, reflect and chill.

When life, in general, come into the equation it can get dicey. Such as...

Your business is taking off and you have a bunch of new things and individuals to manage. Your workload has quadrupled and you feel guilty while you are working that you are not spending as  much time as you should be with those you love.

Or…

You are taking that long awaited getaway and while you are supposed to be replenishing and rejuvenating, you are reviewing your work to-do list in your head.

Sound familiar?

This is and always has been a biggie for me. But thankfully with age comes wisdom (sometimes). I now understand that we have the ability to CHOOSE our focus and the quality of our lives depend very heavily on mastering this skill.

Doing things that help us recharge are critical in terms of propelling us forward. Things like taking a walk or hike in nature, working out in a way that’s good for you, yoga, meditation, prayer, time with friends, time to be creative and try new things, travel, love etc.

Know that when you step back to recharge, you will be coming back much better than had you pushed your way through on minimal sleep and eating a diet that comes out of a box.

Being present and intentional whether you are working hard or in rest and reflection mode is key to your happiness and sense of fulfillment.

Some tips on staying in and enjoying the moment..whether going full force or replenishing your reserves are…

  • Put your phone away or turn it OFF. No, the world won’t end, it may become a little more in focus.

  • Look into people’s eyes - really - not over their shoulders or down at the ground. When you are in person, really connect. Don’t waste the opportunity.

  • Breathe. Take a deep breath from time to time and regularly. Tension dissipates and your thoughts become a little more clear when you remember to breathe.

  • Do your best. Work with the resources you have that day to do your absolute best with whatever it is you are undertaking.

How Quantum Leaps In Thinking Can Propel You Forward In Ways You Never Thought Possible

“Act as if success is certain.” - Price Pritchett

Recently I was listening to a podcast by Brian Buffini, (although I am not in the real estate profession, I find Brian to be wicked smart, driven beyond compare and a phenomenal human being...check out his podcast when you have a chance, you’ll be glad you did) and heard him recommend a book by Price Pritchett called...

you2
A High-Velocity Formula for Multiplying Your Personal Effectiveness in Quantum Leaps

So naturally, I had to immediately hop onto my Amazon Prime account (those guys LOVE me!) and get a copy sent out ASAP!

It’s a super quick read.

The first time I read it, a few weeks ago, I blew through it, thought it was great and set it on my nightstand.

Fast forward to this morning when my early morning workout plans fell apart at the last minute, so I decided to snuggle back into my down comforter and luxuriate a bit with a little reading … instead of braving the cold and dark trip down the highway to the gym (go me!).

This time I was a little (no, a lot) sleepy (it was about 4:45 am) and my brain processed was I was reading a little differently than the first time I plowed through it.

And although subconsciously I may have known these things to be true my whole life...Dr. Pritchett’s words put everything together in a powerful and succinct way which brings this knowing into the conscious level, where it can be acted upon deliberately, thereby changing trajectory enormously, rather than in tiny increments.

Here are a few take aways to get you going. You get to decide where you go from here.

“You don’t focus on the ‘middle’ of the jump … but where you want to land.” - Price Pritchett

Quantum Leaps are NOT about trying harder. Trying harder produces only incremental gains, not Quantum Leaps. (Physicists studying Quantum Mechanics found that particles make  jumps, from one area to another, without apparent effort and without covering all the bases between the starting and ending point.). Quantum leaps never happen by doing the same thing you’ve always done.

“Be ruthless about trying something different. Conventional growth comes because we think along conventional lines.” - Price Pritchett

You can’t achieve exponential gains from a defensive posture or a passive stance. Quantum leaps require you to let go of your fear of failure. Failure is a sign of progress. Failure can be a resource. It helps you leave the status quo and find the edge of your true potential. (When sending a rocket toward the moon or an aircraft around the globe, it’s off course 90% of the time. It fails its way to it’s intended destination by continually making mistakes and correcting them.).

So try something different. Think outside the box. Expect and believe you will get the answers and resources you need, right when you need them. Be bold and follow through...your desired destination awaits you!
